I spent the past few weeks learning how to build a website.
I learned the design process, where to look for inspiration, and how to develop a website from scratch using Figma and Webflow.
I’m even building my new portfolio website right now.
💻 Why am I adding web design to my services
First, I must say: this is an experiment.
I’m going all in on this, but it’s mostly a big test. I need to understand if this is something I really want to do and if this is a market need.
I can always revert to doing just copywriting.
1. I felt like it was needed
Working with clients, I learned how hard it is for them to juggle multiple freelancers for a simple project like a website.
I felt like I can increase my value tremendously by being a one-stop shop for clients to build their website.
I now offer the full package: Copy + Design + Development.
2. It’s always great to learn a new skill
Even if I revert back to just copywriting, I can use what I’ve learned to give clients beautiful mockups when I present my work. I already see how learning the fundamentals of design can help copywriters be more successful.
I love to invest in new skills because it’s one of the only things I can’t lose.
3. Working on more interesting projects
I always wanted to get my hand in more things than just copy.
This is an opportunity to expand and take on bigger projects.
4. It’s a challenge
I love pushing my capabilities to new limits.
Scott Galloway said that in your 20s, run long distances and heavy weights, both in the brain and in the gym.
I like that.
Design is a hard topic to learn, and I feel like I’m pushing the boundaries of my knowledge.
5. I have always wanted to have an eye for design
I felt like design was a weakness. I didn’t have productive talks with designers because I didn’t have basic knowledge of what they do.
I’m starting to become more and more confident in an area that I hated a few weeks ago, and this feels great.
📖 Should you learn web design as well?
Probably not. Most copywriters have no reason to do so.
But it’s worth thinking about expanding your skillset.
Having a basic knowledge of Figma can help any copywriter separate himself from others by presenting his work in a pleasingly aesthetic way.
Understanding web design fundamentals can lead to better relationships with designers (and potentially more and better work in the future). Copywriters already work very closely with them on a regular basis.
We can charge more because we bring more value to the client.
Is this newsletter going to be about web design now?
No.
Even with my current journey, copywriting is still and will continue to be, an essential pillar of my work.
I love writing and I believe in the power of words.
I will stick to writing about copywriting here on substack, and I’ll use my Twitter to share general lessons from my work and build in public.
Thanks for following!
